Reasons Why Abba Kyari’s Death is a Big Deal – Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff Abba Kyari is the highest profile person to have died as country remains in lockdown.
Abba Kyari, the loyal chief of staff to Nigeria’s president Buhari has died from Covid-19 after a about month-long battle with the virus.
Kyari was considered as one of the 3 most powerful people in Nigeria and said to have the complete trust of Buhari. Some had even considered him as the defacto head of the government because in a nation where the presidency holds an inordinate portion of centralized power and government funds, overseeing the entire allocation process smells of immense power and influence.
Despite his high political position, the late chief of staff had not affinity for the limelight.
Kyari, who graduated from Warwick and Cambridge universities in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s, was considered as an intellectual by those who dealt with him.
The late chief of staff was said to have contracted the infection on an official trip to Germany last month. He was confirmed with the coronavirus on Mar. 23. At the time, he was noticeably in high spirits and widely expected to recover. But now some reports have ocme to light that Kyari had underlying conditions.
Kyari’s passing is a masive setback to the Buhari presidency. It leaves a gigantic hole in the administration as it juggles responding to a covid-19 outbreak—which is likely to tip Nigeria’s economy into its worst economic downturn in 3 decades according to the IMF—and battling multiple insecurity challenges, including a damaging Boko Haram insurgency that has left the military exchausted. Kyari’s passing may also prompt president Buhari into a quick cabinet shake-up.
Kyari was one of many high profile political figures in Nigeria to have contracted coronavirus. The state governors of Oyo (Seyi Makinde) and Bauchi (Bala Mohammed) had both contracted the virus in March and have recovered. The Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai on the other hand is still in care.
Nigeria still has a comparatively low number of confirmed coronavirus cases with just 493 and 17 deaths, which is a relatively a small spec in its 200 million population. But there have been growing concerns the country is not giving enough tests to be certain with only about 7,000 tests done.

FACT CHECK: Two days after the death of Abba Kyari, a Twitter user claimed, among other things, that prior to his death, he was flown to the UK for medical treatment and his body was later cremated. Checks by The ICIR have, however, found this to be false. https://t.co/0eMtNHlzOU
